PUBLIC RELATIONS

Public Relations Chair - Dan Muench

Website Manager - Herb Peterson

Eagle Projects, Court of Honors, or anytime your unit does or has plans to do something of interest, contact your local paper and get it published!  What better way to get recognition for that person, your Troop and for all of Scouting!

If you need more information as to how to accomplish this, you can contact Dan Muench.  He is the PR Coordinator for the District and has information that he is willing to share with you.

It will be up to the individual units, however, to provide what is needed to the paper for publication.

Unit website availability.

Prairie Lake District website does not have the availability to host any website, but we do have the capability to link to websites.  If your unit has a website that you would like me to link to, please feel free to contact me and I will put that information in the Unit Section of this site.

Northernstar Council's knowledge of what you can do for a website:

Northernstar Council does not host unit web sites. Northernstar Council's web site is hosted on Omnera Interactive's server. Omnera is one of many Internet Service Providers (ISP) that provide their customers web site page space. Some ISP's provide free space if Internet access service is purchased. Others will provide space to non-profit organizations like Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troop, Venture Crews, and Explorer Posts.

The council has arranged for special pricing of web space for units through Omnera of $5 per month (payable through the council in an annual $60 payment).  Units taking advantage of this option will have a unit website address of their unit type and unit number.indianhead.org (such as www.pack45.indianhead.org) and up to 15 Megabytes of space.  For more information contact Kent York at Northernstar Council:  kyork@indianhead.org or by phone at 651-254-9142.

There are also ISP's that will provide "free space" for non-profit organizations. Most have restrictions like someone in your unit must subscribe to the ISP or you are limited to a very small about of space. Others provide like services as Omnera at equal to or greater pricing.  Shop around, but I suggest Omnera.

My knowledge of things:

As stated in the above paragraph from Northernstar Council's site, there are "free space" providers out there, but not only do you have to be careful as to how much space you get, but you have to be ready to usually have a lot of advertising being put on your site and a lot of pop-ups when people visit.  This is how they are paying for your "free space".  Also with this sort of advertising, you do not have control over what is placed on your free site.

So keep this in mind as you are out there searching around for a host, but remember once you locate a home, email me the address so I can place a link on this site!
